In May of 1964, GRIDLEY visited Australia as part of the Coral Sea Festival.  A periodic remembrance of the U.S. Navy saving Australia from invasion in World War II.  Gridley visited Adelaide, then Perth and Geraldton.  For many years afterwards, new members of the crew were regaled with stories of hospitality, drinking everything in sight and endless lines of women demanding the attentions of GRIDLEY sailors.  It seems suspicious, however, that none of these guys can come up with any pictures.

"After all these years, I'm just beginning to understand why paw always remembers the Coral Sea Battle. . . "

Geraldton, Western Australia    May 1964.  This pic shows the stern missle launcher and a bagpipe band from Geraldton playing. The ship was open  to the people of Geraldton for tours.  (Wayne Hoppke)

Enroute to Subic Bay.
A picture of me and a kangaroo that was given to the ships company by our hosts in Geraldton, Australia I believe. It wasn't too long at sea before the kangaroo disappeared. It probably didn't take to shipboard life as well as we did............

(I suspect a cover-up here.  Did the little roo just hop over the side one day or was there some skullduggery here?)
