In December of 2001, the web geeks of USSGRIDLEY.COM got an e-mail from a young woman in Australia.  She was looking for her father, whom she had only recently found out about from her mother.  By Christmas we had tracked down quite a bit of information, we being Letitia herself and the group of Phil Carter, Bob Lonergan, David Pitman, Ed Thralls, Jim Hampton, Bob Jack, Richard Aamodt, Jack (The Paymaster), and Inomata Kingi.  (Hereinafter known as the GRIDLEY uncles)

Now, Letitia is in contact with her father and his family and we will keep you posted when there is some concrete information.  For now,  we will respect the privacy of our shipmate.

Phil Carter will be in Australia on business this Fall and visit Letitia on behalf of the GRIDLEY uncles.

Letitia

Hi Keith & Phil

I found your name on the USS Gridley site (http://home.nycap.rr.com/pwcarter/)
and am interested in trying to locate an African American serviceman (serving on the USS Gridley) who goes by the name of (deleted).  He met my mother (Robin) when she was performing at the Port Authority, for the Battle of the Coral Sea Celebrations in Wellington New Zealand on 21 May 1967.  His friend (I don't know his name) went out with her best friend Rosemary.  They returned to Wellington in April 1968.

My mother has only just told me that (deleted) is my father.  I was born on 20 February 1968, in Napier New Zealand.  My name is Letitia.  I am now 33yo, married, and have a 4mth old daughter.  I am happily settled in my life, and now live in Australia.  I am interested in locating my father for medical reasons, not only for myself, but now for my daughter.

If you know of him, and know of his whereabouts, or any other information, please could you respond.  From what I can gather, he was about 32 or 33, when he met my mother, so he may be 65 or 66 now.  I am not looking for any financial assistance, I just want to find out the other half of my heritage.  I would love to see a photo of him, to see if we look alike.

I am aware that he could either be living, or may have even passed over.  But if I have any siblings (which I understand I have), I would like to make contact with them.

By the way...your site is brilliant and very informative!

Thanking you in advance, and Happy Holidays
Regards

Letitia
