LCDR Rueckert sent Phil Carter this picture after the Decommissioning.  Accidentally he had included the two studliest sailors in the fleet, CF Proud and Phil Carter in this photo taken sometime in 1967.  He says that this picture was taken as we pulled back into Long Beach after our WestPac cruise in 1967.

Tired of looking at people from OI Division from the 60's?  Send us something else to post.

Watch List from OI Division 1963.  Anybody notice Proud RD3?  He always told me he was born an E-5!

John Sporleder also sent us what looks to be an inport watch list as it has ET's on it.

Rascals from OI Div 1968

Same rascals in the OI Berthing Space.  Guy at the far right is my arch-rival Schropp.  We were always trying to out do the other.  A couple of drinks and I'll tell you how we tricked him into thinking he had VD.  (If by chance his current wife sees this, he didn't, honest)

Wayne says that this is a picture of him next to "his" bunk.  I (Phil Carter) say that it is a picture of him next to "my" bunks as I resided in the bottom one as an RD3 and the middle one as an RD2.  I'll never forget trying to prop up the bottom bunk when in a "weakened condition".

Plotting Boards in CIC where intelligent radarmen learned to write backwards, a talent that would take them far in life!  This is where CIC Officer Fred Volmar (who relieved Keith Ott) became "derf ramlov" forever.

Here is the question of the day for all former Gridley radarmen.

How long did this DRT cover survive?  It was still in use as of May 1968.

This is a picture of me (Wayne Hoppke) in Upper CIC while we were still in Bremerton probably during summer 1963 after Commissioning. Chief McCaffery had me coordinate the wood shop in the Yard in making this wooden cover for the Dead Reckconing Tracer. I did the staining and finishing and Hobbs (RDSN) did the fancy gold lettering. Hobbs also did the Shellback certificates for us. It shows the RD Commissioning Crew. The cover, hard to read because of the flash from the camera, shows just under the outline of the ship:

Wayne Hopple and Dave Engle (Camden, NJ) in the OI Division Compartment 1963.  How many hours did many of us sit around that table over the years?
